John B. Gelvin O.D., F.A.A.O. has practiced in Kansas City, MO for the past 11 years and is proud to now be joining the Moyes Eye Care team. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Nebraska and earned his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Indiana University School of Optometry. He completed his residency in Advanced Ophthalmic Disease at Northeastern State University, W.W. Hastings Indian Hospital in Tahlequah, Okla. and Vision Education Foundation, Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Active in education and training, Dr. Gelvin has extensive teaching and research experience in glaucoma. He also instituted the Ophthalmic Disease Service at the Indiana University School of Optometry. Dr. Gelvin’s scientific work has appeared in medical textbooks and journals including Optometry and Vision Science, Optometry Clinics, and Journal of the American Optometric Association.
Dr. Gelvin dedicates much of his efforts to numerous medical and community organizations. As part of his role in the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists, he is Director of ChristianVision Eye Services to Haiti. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, and a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Additionally, Dr. Gelvin served as Chairman of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry Clinical Skills Examination Committee. Each year, he is a Chief Examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. Recently, he served in the capacity of President of the Christianville Foundation Board of Directors in addition to being a member of the board for nine years, which coordinates missionary activities in Haiti. Locally, he is an officer of the Board of the Missouri Optometric Association and is a member to the Kansas City Optometric Society.
